Depressed doctor bit police officer after her car hit wall

A DEPRESSED doctor bit a police officer's arm after she had been drinking vodka.

Pc Jason Payne had to spray Dr Jane Hornsey with CS gas to stop her biting into his forearm during the incident which happened last October.

The officer had been sent to the B6160 running out of Kilnsey in North Yorkshire when a passing motorist came across the doctor after her car struck a low wall.

Geraldine Kelly, prosecuting, told Bradford Crown Court yesterday how the GP became insulting and abusive.

The officer was abused when he tried to get Hornsey to take a breath test and she became hysterical after he arrested her.

Miss Kelly said as the officer tried to restrain the doctor with his arm she bit his forearm hard and eventually he had to use CS gas to free himself.

Miss Kelly said Pc Payne suffered a severe bite mark to his right forearm.

During police interview 52-year-old Hornsey, of Millers House, Arncliffe, Keighley, claimed that she had only started drinking the vodka after her vehicle had become stuck.

Hornsey pleaded guilty to assaulting the officer and Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC imposed a conditional discharge for 12 months after hearing how she had suffered various problems last year.

Barrister Sophie Drake, for Hornsey, said her late husband was at the time suffering from terminal cancer and there was a financial dispute with her practice partners.

Miss Drake said her client's actions were out of character. Her client was suffering from depression.

Hornsey will pay 500 compensation to the officer and 500 in costs.

Judge Durham Hall said the court had sympathy for her, but it also had sympathy for Pc Payne.
