Derelict housing to be used for new community centre

derelict buildings which were once part of a sheltered housing complex for the elderly are set to be transformed into a huge new community centre after senior councillors unveiled £240,000 plans.

Newman Court, in the deprived Wincobank area of Sheffield, has been an eyesore in the area since it closed several years ago, and parts of it have since been demolished.

Since then people living in the area have complained to the council about the lack of a community centre, including boxing trainer Brendan Ingle, who lives in the area.

Under the new scheme, which will be paid for from council funds, the remaining building will be fitted with a new heating system, rewired and equipped with double glazing.

Coun Mick Rooney, Sheffield Council’s communities spokesman, said: “We have listened to people in Wincobank, and we continue to work closely with the local community.

“I have heard lots of ideas for new community activities in the space, as well as plans to expand existing groups. I know parents from a local school want to start a parent and toddler group when the building is in use.

“Even in this difficult financial climate, we can continue to provide good quality and value for money community facilities for the people of Sheffield.”
