Design unveiled for ‘recycled’ stadium at rugby league club

A RECYCLED former football stadium looks set to transform a historic rugby league club’s ground.

Featherstone Rovers chiefs have revealed computerised images of how the new ground will look, including plans to use two stands from the former home of Scarborough Town FC.

The stands were dismantled and transported to Featherstone from the old McCain Stadium in the resort late last year. Scarborough Town FC went out of business in 2007.

Championship club Rovers have submitted plans to redevelop their Big Fellas Stadium to Wakefield Council.

Plans involve erecting the two stands at the railway end of the stadium and extending the pitch by 15m.

Craig Poskitt, Featherstone Rovers’ chief executive officer, said “We are hoping to receive planning permission imminently and supporters have been waiting patiently for the final design.

“The plans were very well received and are an integral component of our Destination Super League Campaign”.

David Shepherd, managing director of South Elmsall Travel, said: “We’re delighted to be the first local business to advertise on the new stands at Featherstone Rovers.

“We hope that we are the first of many and that the Rovers continue the fantastic progress they are making towards their bid for Super League in 2014.”

The club’s commercial manager, Paul Taylor, said: “The new stands not only improve the Big Fellas Stadium immensely and the overall fan experience but they also allow the club to promote sponsors and advertisers more effectively which in turn generates further commercial revenues to help continue our growth.”

Rovers spent around two months last year transporting the entire McCain Stadium piece by piece from Scarborough to Post Office Road. The stands were transported on low-loaders.

Club chiefs say the plans will give Rovers an extra 2,500 covered seats.

Rovers hope a revamped stadium will bring them closer to meeting the gold standard Super League criteria required by the Rugby Football League.
