Designer breaks through into international fashion shows

This time last year Bozena Carter had never sewn a thing but now she is making clothes for her own fashion label.

The 32-year-old accountant works from a small studio she has created at her home in East Ardsley, near Wakefield, describes her style as Victorian Punk and has been exhibiting her clothes at shows held in Europe and America.

Bo, who was given a sewing machine last August, is now considering whether to work part-time to give her more time to concentrate on her designs.

“My husband (Stuart) always said I should be designing clothes as I was always thinking about fashion.

“One day he sent me a link to a competition happening at Leeds Museum looking for the next big fashion designer.

“I sent in some drawings and they liked them.

“That was August and they wanted to make six or seven outfits in a matter of weeks.

“It was crazy. I had never sewn a thing.

“Stuart bought me a sewing machine from a charity shop for £12 and I just started making things,” she added.

Bo did not win the Leeds Fashion Show competition but she has since appeared at shows in Malta, Virginia and around the UK.
