Details revealed of windmill funds drive

The next phase of a fund-raising push to secure £100,000 to finish the restoration of an 18th century windmill will be outlined next week.

The Holgate Windmill Preservation Society will provide details at its annual meeting about efforts to raise the six-figure sum which is still needed to ensure that the work on the historic building in York can be completed.

The preservation society is pursuing a variety of avenues to raise the funds, including submitted applications for grants from organisations such as the Heritage Lottery Fund to secure the cash to fit the sails and complete the restoration.

It is hoped that the restoration project, which is due to cost a total of 550,000, will be completed towards the end of 2011. The windmill dates from 1770 but electric motors were in use when it stopped grinding corn in the 1930s.

The meeting will be held on Monday next week from 7.30pm at Holgate Working Men’s Club in New Lane. The latest in a series of open days will be held this weekend between 11am and 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
