Detective faces charge over ‘assault in pub’

A West Yorkshire police officer has been suspended from duty after he was charged with an assault in a pub.

Detective Sergeant Paul Whiteley, 50, who works for the force’s homicide and major enquiry team, has been charged by North Yorkshire Police following an incident at Fylingthorpe, near Whitby, on May 29.

He is due before Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, June 19, alongside Claire Hughes, who is not thought to be a police officer.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A 50-year-old man from Grange Moor, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and a 42-year-old woman from Lawrence Street, York, have both been charged with assault following the incident which involved another man and a woman who sustained minor injuries.”

Whiteley is thought to have been off-duty at the time of the alleged incident.
