POLICE yesterday visited residents in Beeston, Leeds, to try to find out more about the movements of Jason Jones who it is believed may have been assaulted some time before his death earlier this month.

Mr Jones, 39, died in Leeds General Infirmary on February 5, having been taken ill while remanded in Leeds prison.

He had been in custody since being arrested in Beeston on Tuesday, February 2.

An investigation into Mr Jones’s death is continuing.

Inquiries have led officers to believe he had been assaulted in the days before he was arrested.

They have been working to build up a picture of Mr Jones' lifestyle and movements in the last fortnight of his life, when they think he was living at Flat 4, 40 Lodge Lane, Beeston, Leeds – which is the old church on Lodge Lane.

Yesterday, police were in the area to speak to local residents and businesses to try to find out more about him.

A second post-mortem examination on Mr Jones’s body, conducted last Wednesday, revealed that he died of a serious brain injury and officers are working to establish what caused this.

Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor, of the homicide and major enquiry team, who is leading the investigation described the last fortnight of Mr Jones’ life as “chaotic” as he was drinking heavily and associating with other drinkers in the Beeston area.

Det Supt Taylor said: “When Mr Jones visited his sister on Tuesday, 19 January, he was uninjured but when he was brought into custody he had a black eye and other injuries which suggest he was involved in some sort of altercation.

Det Supt Taylor also urged anyone with information to contact the incident room on 0113 241 3056.

Three men aged 44, 39 and 34, and a 34-year-old woman arrested in connection with Mr Jones’s death and have been bailed pending further inquiries.
