Developer homes in
on plans extension

DEVELOPERS behind a major regeneration project which stalled in the recession are applying to extend planning permission limits for the next stage of the multi-million pound scheme.

York Council gave its approval to the plans in 2006 to transform the semi-derelict Hungate site with 720 new homes as well as a riverside piazza, walkways and cycle paths.

Work has already started on the scheme but the next stage of the Hungate project to transform a 10-acre site within York’s medieval bar walls has been on hold.

Hungate (York) Regeneration Ltd, the company behind the development, wants to renew planning consents as deadlines for work to begin are running out, when members of York Council’s planning committee meets on Thursday. Officers are recommending the request should be backed.

The company, is also seeking permission to alter permission it was granted for the first stage of the works.

Council officers are recommending that the company’s proposal to change six town houses to 12 flats is also given the go-ahead, subject to conditions being agreed.

The regeneration scheme was heralded as one of the most significant building programmes in Europe by the architects behind the scheme.

The largest archaeological dig in York for almost 30 years since the famous Coppergate excavations were carried out ahead of building work.

But the development has been blighted by a series of problems.

The council was planning its new base on the city’s Hungate development, but the proposals were abandoned after concerns from English Heritage.

The local authority was forced to go back to the drawing board and 12 potential schemes were put forward by developers, before a site at West Offices was announced as the preferred location in December 2009.
