Developer kick-starts stalled Eastgate Quarters scheme in Leeds

DEVELOPER Hammerson today restarted its million square-foot Eastgate Quarters scheme in Leeds - the city’s biggest regeneration project - which had stalled during the recession.

An outline planning application has been sent to Leeds Council for the £600 million development, which has flagship John Lewis and Marks and Spencer stores at its core, and will transform the largely empty brownfield site in the north east of the city centre. 4,000 new jobs are expected to be created.

The revised proposals feature 130 shops on two levels, a new civic square, 2,500 car parking spaces, offices and a network of the pedestrianised streets.

Andrew Hilston, Project Director for Hammerson said: “We have had strong feedback on the revised proposal and the time taken to review the original principles has resulted in a best in class masterplan scheme. Retailers are impressed with the new design and the creation of a statement street on Eastgate”

Coun Richard Lewis, executive member responsible for development, said: “The submission of the Eastgate Quarters application demonstrates confidence in Leeds, consolidating the city’s position as one of the most exciting and desirable city centre destinations in the country.

“The revised proposal for the regeneration of this part of the city centre has the potential of attracting major investment to the city and creating significant job opportunities.”

Jeremy Collins, property director for John Lewis said: “Leeds remains an important strategic location in our department store expansion programme. Submission of the new planning application is a significant milestone for the Eastgate Quarters project which we welcome.”
