Developer may appeal refusal after wind farm victory

A wind farm developer says it is exploring its options after the Government sanctioned the building of another scheme nearby.

Villagers in Sancton are expecting Cornwall Light and Power to go to appeal to gain permission for a five-turbine wind farm, which was refused by councillors last year.

It follows the Government allowing an appeal by West Coast Energy Ltd for six turbines on land north of Sober Hill Farm, North Newbald, less than 1km away.

Today councillors are being asked to approve a wind measuring mast that CLP installed without permission on Sancton Wold.

In a report to East Riding Council's planning committee, Sancton Parish Council says there is an "overwhelming mandate" against the area being used for wind turbines.

But planning officials say that the mast doesn't have a detrimental impact and is "considered to comply with policy."

Bob Morgan, Development Manager at Cornwall Light and Power, said: "We believe that the site at Sancton remains a strong one for a small wind farm.

"However, we are continuing to review all our options before deciding whether to take the site forward.

"An important part of this is verifying our existing computer-based wind speed data, which involves us collecting on-site data using a small, temporary mast."

Peter Ayling, the Ramblers Association countryside secretary for the East Yorkshire and Derwent area, said he objected in a personal capacity, adding: "Having two so close together would be unacceptable."

However pro-wind campaigner, Yes2Wind, criticised East Riding councillors for their "indefensible" attitude.

It said that councillors had now turned down eight schemes but all five that had been taken to appeal had been allowed by the Government.
