An historic York site is to be transformed into a £73m student village development from September.

Developer Select Property Group has acquired land and associated premises at St Joseph’s Convent on Lawrence Street in the city.

The 6.3 acre site will be converted into a 649-bedroom student accommodation operated by Select’s Vita Student brand.

As part of the redevelopment, the convent will be refurbished and converted, with an additional 14 three- and four-storey buildings constructed. The surrounding grounds will be landscaped and include an orchard.

Select Property Group chief executive Mark Stott said the purchase in York is a major milestone for the business.

He said: “This prime site in York presents a unique opportunity to deliver distinctive, high quality accommodation in this popular student city. Its proximity to both the city centre and University of York has made it an optimum location we’ve been keen to secure for some time.”

The project will be developed, let and managed by Vita Student, which currently has locations in Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Southampton and Exeter.

Vita Student properties provide studio accommodation alongside facilities including gyms, movie theatres and designated study areas.

In addition to the York development, Vita Student has announced a £67m, 501-room development in Glasgow’s West End.
