Diamond to takehelm at Barclays

Multi-millionaire banker Bob Diamond is to be named as the next chief executive of banking group Barclays.

Mr Diamond, who is estimated to be worth 95m, will take over from John Varley after the incumbent steps down next year, it is understood.

The 59-year-old American’s appointment may be confirmed today as part of a shake-up of top posts at the group, which yesterday announced that it is to create up to 600 jobs in Scotland, giving a much-needed boost to the financial services industry.
