Dig to uncover secrets of hill fort

THE latest archaeological dig will start this month to uncover the past of an Iron Age hill fort in North Yorkshire.

Volunteers are needed to help with the excavations at the Boltby Scar hill fort in the North York Moors National Park.

It is the third dig at the hill fort which is on the south-western edge of the North York Moors, close to Sutton Bank National Park Centre.

Project officer Jennifer Smith said: “The dig at Boltby Scar hill fort is a great chance to unearth a fascinating slice of local history.

“We’re looking for people with an interest in archaeology who could dedicate some time during May to lend a hand.”

The Yorkshire Post revealed last year that an attempt to reclaim part of the North York Moors for farmland 50 years ago had led to a bulldozer flattening the hill fort, which dates back to about 800BC.

About a third of the hill fort’s original defences still survive including a rampart, an external ditch and an outer bank.

The dig will take place from April 30 to May 25 and more information is available from Nick Lishman at the North York Moors National Park Authority on 01439 770657.
