Digital-age tribute to ancient saint

Volunteer Louise Watson is keeping the candles burning in memory of St Wilfrid in the crypt of Ripon Cathedral – though in reality the flames are only digital.

Northumberland-based artist Joanna Hutton wanted to pay tribute to Wilfred because of her own close ties with Hexham Abbey. She sculpted, lit, and photographed upside down a mass of church candles arranged in a U-shape, based on a vestment worn by priests that has a similarly shaped hood.

The metre-wide digital photograph can now been seen on the wall of Ripon Cathedral, accompanied by a display board explaining the process and inspiration.

Hexham-based Ms Hutton exhibited Wilfrid earlier this year in the seventh century crypt established by St Wilfrid where Hexham Abbey now stands.

The display can be seen at the cathedral until Wednesday, June 30.
