Disabled woman’s rapist jailed

A man who pestered a vulnerable disabled woman and raped her in her own home has been jailed for 11 years.

Colin Green, 61, of Springbank Road, Gildersome, Leeds was convicted by a jury on two charges of rape after they rejected his account that his victim consented.

Sentencing him at Leeds Crown Court yesterday, Judge Tom Bayliss QC said Green knew the 52-year-old woman and her partner and began turning up at their home. She did not want to let him in or help him but the couple were scared of him so agreed to let him use the shower on occasions and sometimes the woman did his washing.

The judge said things progressed and Green then demanded sex from the woman, who also had some learning difficulties and did not feel able to talk about what happened to her. She was so distressed by his attention that on one occasion she considered taking her own life.

Complaints were made to the police about his harassment but she did not disclose he had raped her until she informed a sympathetic acquaintance.

Judge Bayliss said he realised Green had his own inadequacies, coming in the bottom one per cent of the population for IQ, but his were serious offences.
