Disabled youngsters put at heart of park sculpture idea

Arc, the architecture centre for Hull and the Humber region, has teamed up with both the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Hull Council to commission a "public realm artist" to work on a sculpture to enhance the proposed garden in East Park.

The artist will be required to design, construct and install a piece – or series of pieces – that are playful, accessible and attractive to youngsters.

The organisers say the design must be blend in with the leafy surroundings by using natural materials, or even submerging the work in water.

Arc says there is a need for more inclusive play spaces, specifically for children with physical and emotional disabilities.

The deadline for expressions of Interest to Arc is 4pm on Friday 14 January.

The design brief says: "Whilst we aspire to make all our play spaces inclusive to all children, the proposals for East Park are in response to the need for more play spaces specifically for children with severe and complex needs who might not access other facilities.

It adds that the successful bidders are expected to have experience of working within the public realm, with community groups, within a budget and of meeting deadlines. They will also have to undergo criminal records checks.
