Disruption warning as resort hosts Forces Day

Traffic chiefs are warning of major disruption when Scarborough hosts Armed Forces Day tomorrow. .

Around 400 soldiers will march through the town to the seafront as part of the celebrations – among the biggest in the north of England.

Although most of Scarborough's off- and on-street parking remains unaffected and access to the seafront is available from the north and south via Marine Drive and Valley Road respectively, there will be a series of rolling road blocks.

Any cars on the parade route will also be removed by police for security reasons.

Scarborough Council technical services manager Bruce Bedford said: "We realise this will cause inconvenience to some motorists and we apologise.

"I hope people will understand that we have a duty to protect the soldiers who are marching, as well as the many hundreds of people we anticipate will be lining the streets to watch the parade.

The soldiers from the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards will set off from William Street car park at 2.30pm, marching along Dean Road, Castle Road, St Thomas Street, Newborough, Eastborough, Sandside and Foreshore Road.

The two battalions – who served together in Afghanistan – will march to below St Nicholas Gardens just before 3pm.
