Disruption warning as work starts on town’s new ‘heart’

SUPPORTERS of a controversial project to redevelop the centre of Northallerton, claim it will create a new heart for North Yorkshire’s county town despite fears over its impact on traffic and parking.

Work begins on the new town square, outside Northallerton Town Hall on Monday, with critics claiming it will take up parking spaces already in short supply and affect market traders and residents during construction, which will take a minimum of three weeks.

However, Councillor Tony Hall, who has helped spearhead the project which has been in development for the past two years, told the Yorkshire Post it will create a vital new focal point for Northallerton and is worth the short-term pain.

“We know there is some sensitivities over these issues but it is going to be worth it”, he said.

“During the building work there is going to be disruption but that will be managed.

“This is clearly an enhancement scheme to increase community events and footfall in the town.

“This will give Northallerton a heart and focal point.”

The new town square, which is expected to cost about £30,000 and be ready in time for the summer, will feature removable seating, bollards and planters and a paved area.

It will take up four car parking spaces and it is hoped it will be used for a range of community events.

Hambleton District Council says during the construction work, measures to ensure disruption to retailers and market traders is kept to a minimum are being put in place and the high street and access road in front of the shops will remain open.
