Distinguished art club holds exhibition at Winter Garden

FOR the third year running, Heeley Art Club – one of the oldest art clubs in Sheffield – is holding its annual exhibition at the city's Winter Garden.

The exhibition, which ends on Sunday, May 23, showcases the work of 31 local artists. Visitors will be able to buy a variety of paintings, cards and small prints, with prices ranging from 25 to 800.

Keith Oakes, president of Heeley Art Club, said: "At one of our first exhibitions, the walls were crowded with pictures, at prices from five shillings.

"Dealers were queuing for the doors to open. Exhibition walls are still crowded, but with prices that have gone up just a little!"

Established in 1895 in Thirwell Road Wesleyan School, Heeley Art Club later moved to Meersbrook Vestry Hall and, over the years, has had many homes.

A room in North Church Street was once a convenient site, as homeless people that used the hostel provided a rich source of models at just a shilling a time.

Heeley Art Club now has 41 members and meets fortnightly. The exhibition at the Winter Garden will run from 9pm to 6pm today and from 9am to 3.30pm on Sunday, May 23.

From June 1, the Winter Garden will also be one of the venues playing host to Sheffield's first food festival. Running for a week, the Sheffield Food Festival will see producers, growers, cooks and suppliers joining together to showcase the skill and knowledge within the city's food industry.

The festival will take place in Barkers Pool, the Peace Gardens, Tudor Square, Devonshire Green and Town Hall Square as well as the Winter Garden.

Sheffield Council leader Paul Scriven said: "We literally have something for everyone's taste."
