Divers’ plea to relatives of war heroes

DIVERS have launched an appeal to trace the relatives of two Yorkshire war heroes who died after their D-Day landing craft sank on the way back from Normandy just four miles from home.

Eric Fields, of Scarborough, and Hallam Carr, of Rotherham, both 19, were part of the 13-man crew killed after their LCT 427 vessel collided with a British battleship in the early hours of June 7, 1944, and sank in the busy shipping waters of the Solent.

Now the Southsea branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) has identified the wreck of the landing craft and is organising a memorial service at sea.

Member Alison Mayor said: “The wreck is an important historical site and the final resting place of the brave men who tragically made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.”
