‘Diverse’ selection of Yorkshire buildings shortlisted for award

AN ARENA, a department store and a cathedral are some of 11 Yorkshire buildings shortlisted by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for an architectural award.

Nominees for the 2015 RIBA Yorkshire Award include the First Direct Arena in Leeds, the reworking of Sheffield Cathedral and the new John Lewis store in York.

Also shortlisted is the cantilevered zinc cube which projects outwards from Leeds College of Music, designed by Darntonegs Architects and Sheffield Hall am University’s Heart of the Campus scheme. Studio Gedye receives two nominations for projects in Sheffield, a modern home built on Ranmoor Road, and Sum Studios, a workspace for creative businesses.

Making up the nominees are 35 Ben Rhydding Road, Ilkley by Halliday Clark Architects; The Blackburn Wing, Wetherby by The Harris Partnership; The Knitters House, Holmfirth by Prue Chiles Architects and University Technical College, Sheffield by HLM Architects.

Each site will be assessed by a regional jury before the winner is announced on April 23.

Regional Director of RIBA Yorkshire, Emma England, said the list of projects was “particularly diverse” in terms of budget, building type and locations.
