DJ Moyles snubbed in Sony radio awards nominations

Radio 1’s Chris Moyles has been snubbed by the Sony Radio Academy Awards, after failing to get a single nomination for the first time in seven years.

Radio 2’s Chris Evans and Absolute’s Christian O’Connell will battle it out for the hotly contested breakfast show honours at this year’s event.

The pair will also face each other in the music radio personality of the year category in May.

But Moyles, the breakfast host for more than eight years, failed to make the shortlist for any category of the awards for the first time since 2005. Last year the 38-year-old was in the running for two gongs.

The awards also demonstrate a huge change in fortunes for once doomed station BBC Radio 6 Music which finds itself in the running for national station of the year.

It is up against sister station Radio 2 and Kerrang! Radio.

Evans and O’Connell face last year’s winner, 5 Live Breakfast, in the breakfast show battle, alongside Jamie Theakston and Harriet Scott’s Heart Breakfast (London) and Kiss Breakfast.

Completing the music personality line-up are Lauren Laverne and Huey Morgan from Radio 6 Music plus Rado 1 Xtra’s Gemma Cairney.

Radio 1’s Fearne Cotton has landed her first Sony nomination for best music programme, against 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, Michael Buble (Magic 105.4), In:Demand Scotland (Bauer Radio Scotland) and Radio 3’s In Tune.

Comic Frank Skinner defends his best entertainment programme prize from last year, against 6 Music’s Adam and Joe, Real Radio’s Dixie and Gayle plus Bauer Radio Scotland’s Boogie and Dingo. The category is completed by the oldest nominees to ever be up for a Sony, Radio Humberside’s Beryl and Betty, who are 86 and 90 respectively. Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish received another nomination for best comedy.

Pete Townshend takes on former Communards star turned clergyman and broadcaster Richard Coles in the best music documentary category.
