Doctor accused of sex attacks on patients

A FAMILY doctor yesterday appeared in court accused of sexually assaulting patients, including teenage girls, over a period of three decades.

Gousul Islam, 69, is charged with 29 offences in total, including 16 counts of indecently assaulting a girl aged under 16, and 13 counts of assaulting a woman aged over 16.

The charges, which involve five female patients and another woman, relate to alleged offences dating back to 1978.

Islam, of Station Road in Hatfield, Doncaster, entered no plea at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning and was released on bail until January, when his case will move to the Crown Court.

He was bailed under a number of conditions, including surrendering his passport and having no contact with a number of named people.

Magistrates heard that the allegations relate to incidents said to have taken place throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

“At least three” of the patients who said they were sexually assaulted by Islam were teenage girls aged between 13 and 16.

It is alleged that the doctor performed intimate examinations without wearing gloves, carried out “inappropriate” examinations on patients’ breasts and genitalia, and also performed sexual acts in view of patients.

Islam was a GP at The Surgery in Lyndhurst Church Road, Stainforth, Doncaster.

Providing he adheres to his bail conditions, he will next appear in court in January.
