Doctors' religion 'affects death care'

NON-RELIGIOUS doctors are almost twice as willing to take decisions that speed up death as those who hold a deep faith, research showed today.

A survey of almost 4,000 British doctors also found that those with strong religious beliefs were less likely to discuss treatments which hastened death with seriously-ill patients.

Doctors who described themselves as non-religious were more likely than any other group to have given continuous deep sedation until death.

The report comes as the Government says good progress has been made on improving end of life care.
