Dog walkers put on a tighter leash at seafront under new council rules

DOG walkers will have to keep their pets on leads for the first time on two East Coast seafronts as a result of new dog control orders.

East Riding Council’s Cabinet is being asked to approve amendments to the rules, which will mean dogs being kept on a leash on Bridlington and Hornsea promenades as well as in the grounds of Skidby Mill and Sewerby Hall. Dogs will be excluded from 51 new fenced children’s play areas including Burden Road, Beverley, Brett Street, Bridlington and Longmans Lane, Cottingham.

They will also have to be on leads in an extra 31 cemeteries and graveyards, including Burstwick, Carnaby, Driffield Garden of Remembrance, Garton on the Wolds and Hedon.

It follows two rounds of consultation, first with the East Riding’s 168 parish and town councils, then with the public.

Nearly two-thirds of those who responded were dog owners.

While the majority of respondents – including the RSPCA,
Ramblers Association and The Kennel Club – approved of keeping dogs out of children’s
play areas, less than a third supported keeping them off playing fields.

The orders will have to go to full council for final sign-off.
