Dog was thrown off Leeds flats balcony

A sick thug killed a pet dog by throwing it from the seventh floor balcony of a block of flats in an act of 'mindless cruelty' during a violent rage.

After carrying out the despicable act, Joseph Kay spat on the animal’s dead body and clapped in triumph before walking away.

Kay, 21, was jailed for eight months over the incident which took place at a party at Cromwell Heights, Burmantofts.

Leeds Crown Court heard Kay had been at a party at the flat on January 31 and became “drunk and loutish” as the evening went on.

He was eventually asked to leave by the woman who lived at the flat and became aggressive,

The woman noticed that Kay had a knife in his pocket and she managed to take it from him.

Kay then punched the woman and another female who went to help.

Kay then grabbed hold of the dog, a one-year terrier called Snowball, and threw it from the balcony.

He then continued to attack the two woman. Both women were kicked in the head after being knocked to the ground by Kay.

Kay, of Conference Road, Armley, pleaded guilty to two offences of assault occasion actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

He has previous convictions for violent offences.

Judge Robin Mairs said: “This was gratuitous and mindless violence on two woman in their own home.

“You took hold of of the pet dog that was do doubt distressed and flung it from the seventh floor balcony.

“That was an act of mindless cruelty.

“You spat on the dog and clapped your hands in triumph as you walked away.”

The judge added: “It was so serious only an immediate custodial sentence can be justified.”
