Domestic abuse campaign launched

a hard-hitting campaign has begun to try to tackle domestic abuse in some of the most remote areas of North Yorkshire – urging potential victims not to be "on the receiving end" of violence in the home this Christmas.

Designed both to raise awareness and show how bullied partners can get help, the initiative is being promoted by the Hambleton and Richmondshire community safety partnerships.

The wording "Don't be on the receiving end" and "Not everyone gets what they wish for at Christmas" appears on posters which are being sent to local agencies and businesses.

"Christmas is meant to be a happy time for families but for many living in our districts it will be a time of fear and pain," said Sarah Hill, director of the York-based charity Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS).

"The pressure builds up as people spend more time together than normal – which can often be a flash point for abuse.

"But we are here and ready to help – to listen or to provide some shelter."
