Donated painting makes Tate tour

A painting by artist William Scott valued at more than £500,000 has been given to the Tate Gallery by his family to mark the centenary of his birth.

The 1952 painting, called The Harbour, will feature in the first major exhibition of his work in the UK in more than two decades which will begin at Tate St Ives in Cornwall next January before coming to Wakefield and the going to Belfast.

In a statement, his sons Robert and James Scott said: “his seminal work has over the past 50 years been exhibited worldwide in Brazil, Japan, USA as well as in Europe. It is only fitting that such an internationally-known painting by William Scott now finds its home at the Tate.”

Scott, who was born in Greenock, Scotland, spent part of his childhood in Enniskillen before studying in Belfast and London.

He started out as a traditional landscape and figure painter before developing a more abstract style.
