PEOPLE living in parts of Leeds have just a few days left to comment on plans to expand local primary schools.

Education chiefs in Leeds are currently looking at whether to increase places at schools in the Morley, Belle Isle, Armley, Calverley and Cross Gates areas of the city from 2011 and are currently seeking views on their proposals.

Education Leeds is proposing to expand Blackgates Primary School, Clapgate Primary School, Windmill Primary School, Ryecroft Primary School, Calverley C of E Primary School and Cross Gates Primary School to 420 places each from 2011 to ensure there is a place for every child.

Parents, carers and residents are being asked for their views on the plans which have been put forward to meet an increased demand for reception class places arising from an increased birth rate and movement into Leeds from other areas.

The consultation, which ends on Friday, follows previous work by Education Leeds to provide additional places in Leeds schools from September 2010.

Coun Richard Harker, executive board member for education at Leeds City Council, said: “This consultation is a vital part of the process to provide local school places for every child.

“The demand for places varies across Leeds and we are adapting to make sure our schools can meet these demands. The views of local people are very important and need to be considered before a final decision is made.”

Chris Edwards, chief executive of Education Leeds, said: “The demand for primary school places in these areas will increase from 2011 and these six schools are able to provide additional places to ensure education will be available to every child.

“The consultation will ensure families and local communities can find out more about the plans and help influence the final decision. It is vital that those who haven’t already taken part do so before February 12.”
