Double blow for drivers as two bridges close for repairs

MOTORISTS could soon be lamenting the bridges of sighs after neighbouring councils announced plans to carry out repairs to two of the region's oldest river crossings at the same time.

Boothferry Bridge near Goole will close for 10 weeks on Monday, February 28, when East Riding Council begins a 1.2m maintenance project.

Diversions will be in place with most vehicles travelling on the M62 Ouse Bridge.

However, non-motorway traffic, such as agricultural vehicles, could face a 24-mile round trip via Selby.

They will also run into delays and find their way across Selby Town Swing Bridge barred – because North Yorkshire County Council is carrying out its own programme of improvements.

The county council said it had chosen the timing of the work to "have the least possible impact on businesses", while East Riding Council said it had consulted with farmers and wanted to avoid summer and harvest.

Buses will be laid on for pedestrians who normally use either bridge, and arrangements are being made to transport mopeds and cyclists affected by the closure of Boothferry Bridge.

Shipping will be unaffected by either closure.

Boothferry Bridge was built in the 1920s to replace the ferry across the river.
