Doubts raised over pumping station as homes swamped

FEARS have been raised that a key pumping station was not functioning properly in a Yorkshire town badly hit by flooding.

A huge mobile pump and two water tankers arrived at Goole’s Carr Lane pumping station on Thursday followed yesterday by dozens of specialist contractors, according to local reports.

More than a dozen homes in the town were hit by flooding on Thursday after a torrential downpour.

Coun Keith Moore said: “All the indicators are that there is a major issue with Carr Lane pumping station. If there wasn’t there wouldn’t be all these specialist engineers operating there in the numbers there are. They wouldn’t have had a massive pump in there on Thursday night.”

Last August more than 700 properties in Goole were flooded and there were calls for compensation after Yorkshire Water admitted that its Carr Lane pumping station had temporarily failed. Yorkshire Water declined to comment about “the performance of their assets.”

A spokesman said people should not be alarmed by the arrival of contractors who were there in case problems developed. Asked about the cost of having experts on the scene, he said: “We would rather spend that money if we can protect people and make sure we are doing as good a job as possible.”
