Dozing bats put brake on demolition of Bradford & Bingley HQ

A YORKSHIRE MP says he plans to meet with supermarket giant Sainsbury’s after it emerged that hibernating bats were delaying its demolition of the derelict former Bradford & Bingley headquarters.

Hidden hibernating pipistrelles mean the building in Bingley cannot be knocked down as planned and must wait for the protected animals to wake up in spring.

Demolition had been due to begin in January and Sainsbury’s said it would level the site to make it more marketable.

The town’s Conservative MP Philip Davies said: “I want to see the report about the bats, and I want to see Sainsbury’s working with Bradford council, so they can see what can be done lawfully, as quickly as possible.

“I am fixing to meet with Sainsbury’s so I can see the report and see what can be done. This is absolutely crucial for Bingley town centre.”
