Dragon boat race raises charity cash

Teams from across South Yorkshire took to the water for a boat race with a difference at the weekend.

The annual Dragon Boat Regatta, which takes place at Rother Valley Country Park, raises vital funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity as crews battle it out in front of more than 3,000 spectators.

During Saturday's event, more than 15 teams, which are made up of between 13 and 20 people, raced in impressive 40ft long Dragon Boats the length of the main lake at the country park, on the edge of the city.

Each boat had a professional helmsman, to ensure the craft stayed on course, and each team raced at least three times before the fastest crews went through to the finals.

The senior fundraiser at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, Catherine Newman, said: "The event has always proved a huge success in the past and the teams on Saturday put in an impressive performance."

She added: "The Dragon Boat Regatta always succeess in raising fantastic amounts of money for the charity and we are extremely grateful for people's continued support."
