The young girl had got into difficulty after being swept out into the sea and her father had gone out to help; however, despite being close inshore, the two had got stuck at the back of breaking surf.

HM Coastguards requested the launch of Whitby’s RNLI inshore and all-weather lifeboats to attend nearby Robin Hood’s Bay to help the stranded duo.

With the help of the coastguard, the inshore lifeboat found the two, who were physically exhausted and struggling to keep their heads above the water.

The inshore boat then headed into deeper water before transferring the father and daughter to the all-weather vessel, where they were checked over by the crew and wrapped in warm blankets.

Following their rescue on Sunday afternoon, the pair were winched to a coastguard helicopter and then taken to hospital to be treated for severe cold and fatigue.

Whitby RNLI Coxswain Mike Russell said: “It was a difficult job, but both crews performed a textbook rescue. Thank goodness we reached the casualties in time to save their lives.”
