Drink and drugs battle stepped up

THE first college of its kind in England will open in a Yorkshire city to train recovering addicts to help others overcome their dependency on drugs and alcohol.

A national charity, called Wired Into Recovery, has been commissioned by York Council to launch the new facility to mirror a successful community project which is running in Glasgow.

The Recovery College will provide training for former addicts for them to work in their own community to support others who want to stay off alcohol or drugs.

It will build on work which has already seen a downward trend in the number of people needing support for addiction.

There were 511 people undergoing supported recovery from alcohol dependency in York in October 2011, and the figure had reduced to 490 in September this year.

The college will be led by volunteer graduates of the Glasgow scheme who are now in paid employment.

The free programme runs from January 28 on Mondays and Tuesdays for a six-week period. More information is available by emailing [email protected]
