Drink-driving reminder issued as arrests mount

POLICE have issued a warning over the catastrophic consequences of getting behind the wheel while over the limit after scores of motorists have been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving during the festive season in North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police officers have already detained 84 people on suspicion of drink or drug-driving since the force’s annual festive crackdown began at the beginning of December.

Figures released earlier this year by North Yorkshire Police revealed 30 people had been killed and nearly 800 injured because of drivers over the legal limit on the county’s roads in the past five years.

Traffic Sergeant Pete Stringer, of North Yorkshire Police’s roads policing group, warned anyone hoping to evade officers on the county’s extensive network of often rural roads is likely to still get caught as the force is mounting a wide-ranging operation.

He added: “Of course we want people to have a good time with their family and friends over the Christmas period but motorists must not take any chances and drive while unfit to do so. I can’t stress enough how dangerous drink or drug driving is and how devastating it can be not just at Christmas but at any time of year.

“Lots of people will be going out to celebrate tonight and if you are please take some responsibility and make alternative arrangements to get home if you want to have a drink. Just because it’s Christmas it doesn’t mean our officers aren’t out looking for drink and drug drivers. In fact, it’s quite the opposite and if you take the risk it is likely you will get caught out.”

Anyone who believes a driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs is being urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on the non-emergency number of 101.
