Drinkers show community spirit with bid to run pub as co-op

DRINKERS at a Yorkshire pub are hoping to buy the business and run it as a co-operative.

So far more than 100 regulars have pledged an initial £82,000 to buy the Fox and Goose, in Hebden Bridge.

Pub owner Julia Warren is selling because of ill health. It is believed that only seven pubs in the UK are run as co-operatives.

A group called Fox Friends has been established but it may take months to raise the estimated £275,000 needed to buy the pub.

Ms Warren, who has lost her eyesight, said she does not want the pub to become part of a chain or be converted into homes.

She said the Fox and Goose was an old-fashioned pub which sold real ale.
