Drive to alert kids to road dangers

A ROAD safety campaign aimed at protecting some of the most vulnerable road users is set to be launched this month.

The Tales of the Road campaign will focus on the education and training of children between the ages of six to 11, and their parents, to understand and use the Green Cross Code in Bradford.

Figures that were produced by the Government revealed that the biggest contributory factors to road accidents were children crossing near parked vehicles or not looking properly before crossing the road.

Coun David Green, the council’s executive member for regeneration and economy, said: “Training children to understand and use the Green Cross Code correctly is an essential part of ensuring that they learn to use the roads safely as they begin to travel independently.” In Great Britain last year there were 10 pedestrians between the ages of six and 11 killed on roads and 675 were seriously injured.

In 2009, there were eight killed and 637 seriously injured on the nation’s roads.

In Bradford last year, there was one pedestrian between the age of six and 11 who was killed, and 17 were seriously injured.
