Drive to boost use of sports facilities

A PROMOTIONAL campaign is due to be launched after concerns were voiced that sports facilities in a North Yorkshire district are being underused.

Harrogate Borough Council has drawn up plans to increase the number of people using facilities by offering two-for-one offers and discounted prices.

Officers at the council have admitted that sports facilities in both Harrogate and Knaresborough are not attracting enough users.

The campaign would see two-for-one offers for tennis courts at Harrogate’s Rossett Sports Centre and a disc golf course at the town’s Valley Gardens.

The course is thought to be the first created by a local authority after it opened last year to promote the sport where players throw a disc into a basket or at a target.

A total of 655 people have used the disc golf course since it was opened, with games costing £2.10 for adults and a reduced fee of £1.50 for children and other concessions.

The promotional push is also due to see a £2 discount for tennis players using courts at Conyngham Hall in Knaresborough, which have been revamped at a cost of nearly £10,000.
