Driver jailed for 130mph dash on M62

POLICE had difficulty keeping up with a motorist who was doing up to 130mph on the M62 motorway.

Darminder Singh Khela was driving his Audi car normally when first seen by officers in an unmarked police car in the early hours of September 20 on the A639.

But as they also drove towards junction 4 of the M621 his speed increased and it continued to do so onto the M62. At one stage the officers reached 146mph in their vehicle.

Eventually a marked police car flagged down Khela who had slowed down. He was subsequent found to be over the drink driving limit with 61 microgrammes in his breath, the limit being 35. He was also found to have cannabis on him.

John Wilkinson for Khela said he was involved in his local Sikh community. Khela, 28 of Southlands Drive, Huddersfield, was jailed for eight months and banned from driving for three years after he admitted dangerous driving, driving over the limit and possessing cannabis.

Judge Kerry Macgill said his speed must have been at least 130mph for the police to have to do more to catch him. "The message has to go out that people who drive on motorways at the speed you did can only expect a custodial sentence."

He said Khela had a previous drink-drive conviction in 2004.
