Driver killed after walking on to A1

A DRIVER was killed by a lorry after he stopped his car and stepped out on to the busy A1 yesterday.

The southbound carriageway was closed between junction 48 and 47 for around six hours after the man was hit at 8.30am near Allerton Park in North Yorkshire.

Officers from North Yorkshire Police are now trying to find out why the man stopped his car on the motorway.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The male driver and sole occupant of the car stood on the carriageway at the time of the collision and sadly he died as a result of the crash.

“Officers need to establish why the man had stopped and got out of his car and are appealing for anyone who remembers seeing a stationary silver car and a man on the south-bound carriageway this morning, to also contact them.”

No one else was injured and police have arrested the lorry driver in connection with the crash, which also led to the short-term closure of the northbound carriageway.

Police are urging witnesses to contact traffic constable Steve Gardner on 101.
