Drivers given points and fined for using mobile phones

POLICE officers in Doncaster have been cracking down on drivers using mobile phones at the wheel.

On Monday police issued fixed penalty tickets to six people who were caught using their mobile phones while driving.

During just two hours on patrol, officers stopped three men in Cantley, one man in Rossington, one man in Armthorpe and one woman in Barnby Dun for using their mobile phones.

All six were fined £60 and given three points on their licence.

Superintendent Eddie Murphy said yesterday: “There is an obvious safety message here.

Drivers should be concentrating on the road and if they are using their phones, they are putting themselves in danger as well as other road users and pedestrians.

“Accidents can and are caused by momentary lapses of concentration and when drivers are distracted.

People in South Yorkshire have been prosecuted and jailed for causing accidents and sometimes deaths when they were using their mobiles.

“Furthermore, your insurance company may not pay out if it is discovered that you were on your phone at the time of the accident.”

Meanwhile, Doncaster police also issued a warning about buying stolen goods yesterday, after a burglary at an off-licence.

Between 10.30pm on Tuesday and 5am yesterday, burglars broke into an off-licence in Littlemoor Lane, Balby, and stole a large quantity of tobacco and alcohol.

Superintendent Murphy said: “We want the public to be aware and to say no to making this sort of purchase.

“The more demand there is for stolen goods, the more criminal activity such as burglaries will take place.

“If you are caught handling stolen goods, whether intentional or not, appropriate action will be taken against you.

“If the price is too good to be true, walk away and make sure you buy from a reputable, licensed retailer.”
