Drivers heed World Cup booze alert

A WORLD Cup anti-drink drive campaign has been a success in York.

Figures released by North Yorkshire Police show that in York, while the World Cup was on and the DES (designated driver) campaign was running, drivers heeded the warning and stayed off the drink if they were getting back behind the wheel.

Of the 113 drivers tested during June in York, only one was positive for alcohol.

Inspector Dave Brown said: "This is a really good result. The Association of Chief Police Officers' figures suggest a national fail rate of 5.9 per cent, so for us in York to have less than one per cent prove positive for drink driving, in June shows that the campaign has had some impact.

''I hope that the driving population maintain this praiseworthy attitude and support our concerted efforts to eradicate this crime from our roads."

Across the North Yorkshire County Council, just two per cent of those being tested proving positive.

After the end of the campaign the July figures for drink drivers rose slightly to 2.6 per cent in York and three per cent in North Yorkshire.
