Drivers set to get safety reminder

POLICE and firefighters were today set to stage an event at one of the region’s busiest motorway service stations as part of an international effort to cut accidents.

Drivers visiting Doncaster North services at the junction of the M18 and M180 will be asked to take part in a series of displays, activities and safety briefings.

The effort is part of the World Health Organisation’s decade of action for road safety, which aims to draw attention to 1.3 million annual deaths worldwide in traffic collisions.

Today’s events have been organised by South Yorkshire’s safer roads partnership, which involves all three emergency services and the county’s four local councils.

The fire brigade will show motorists how they cut casualties free from crashes and will also use a driving simulator to show drivers how accidents happen.

Station manager Jon Torn said: “This day is a landmark date for road safety and we want to get out there to do our bit.

“Our new driving simulator is one of the best ways of testing drivers in different conditions, in a safe environment – and showing how their actions affect the safety of themselves and other road users.”
