Drivers warned of more disruption as water project hits half-way stage

HUGE new water pipes have arrived in Malin Bridge, marking the halfway point of an £11m project being carried out by Yorkshire Water in Sheffield.

Contractor Balfour Beatty started work on the three-year project in 2008 and has already completed work on 42km of pipe in and around Gleadless, Norton, Ecclesall, Fullwood and Norton Lees.

Malin Bridge is the most recent phase of the scheme, but another 40 km of water mains still have to be completed in the west and south of the city and parts of the city centre.

Project manager Ian Johnson said: ""We always knew there would be some disruption and we've tried to ensure communities have been warned before we move in, but by far the majority seem to understand the work is vital if Sheffield is to continue to benefit from a safe and reliable supply of water.

"This work should help to reduce the number of bursts or incidents of discolouration and should last for generations to come, but we recognise no one likes having their routine disrupted by roadworks, so we'll continue to do everything we can to get the job done as quickly as possible."

Work is beginning on the second phase of the Malin Bridge project this week.

This will involve creating a one-way system being along Dykes Lane and temporary traffic lights on Rivelin Valley Road.
