Drivers warned over bridge repairs

MOTORISTS have been warned to expect delays when a 16-week project begins to strengthen a "vital" road bridge linking a Barnsley village to the town centre.

Council contractors will start work on the bridge in Church Street, Darton on Monday and the traffic have to use one lane, controlled by traffic lights

A steel girder is to be replaced and other beams strengthened. At the same time the bridge waterproofing will be replaced and underside steelwork blast-cleaned and repainted.

The work will be carried out with Yorkshire Water as there is a need to divert a water main.

Cabinet spokesman for development Coun Bill Newman said: "These works are essential to maintain this vital link between Darton and the Barnsley East area. The main alternative route is Huddersfield Road and Old Mill Lane which is a considerable distance and would add to traffic congestion in the town."

The nearby post office footbridge will also be replaced at the end of September with a modern, two-metre-wide cycle-footbridge. It was closed to the public in March because it was unsafe.
