Drug crime will not be tolerated, warn police

POLICE have pledged to intensify the war on drugs after the latest in a series of raids in North Yorkshire uncovered a cannabis farm in a Victorian terraced side street in York.

Officers from the North Yorkshire force have been conducting operations throughout the county in recent weeks which have led to several arrests linked to cannabis production.

The Yorkshire Post revealed on Saturday that three men had been arrested by armed police in raids on three properties in Grosvenor Terrace in the Bootham area of York, as part of the purge on drug dealing.

More than a dozen cannabis plants were seized along with what it is believed to be prepared cannabis and amphetamines during the operation on Friday.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with possession and bailed. A man aged 57 and another aged 44 were also arrested on suspicion of drug offences.

Sgt Martin Metcalfe, of the Clifton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "The success of these is raids is due in no small part to the assistance we have received from the local community who have given us very useful information.

"We will continue to work with the community in the area and tackle the main issues brought to our attention. We will not tolerate any anti-social behaviour and crime within our communities."

A revolution in policing has gleaned vital intelligence to execute raids on cannabis farms which have also sprung up across rural North Yorkshire.

A major drive to ensure more officers are deployed into the heart of North Yorkshire's communities is now beginning to reap the rewards.

An operation in the rural parts of the Selby district, which was set up in mid-June, has already uncovered five small-scale cannabis farms.
