Drug squad hold seven after raids

Police have raided homes across North Yorkshire as part of an operation to seize stashes of the newly reclassified drug mephedrone.

Officers arrested seven people after a series of weekend raids in York and Harrogate in response to the new legislation, which was introduced on Friday.

It comes after two large seizures of mephedrone in North Yorkshire last week in which around three kilograms of the drug, with a street value of around 30,000, was recovered.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick said last night: "We are taking the threat of mephedrone extremely seriously and we are determined to bring anyone dealing this substance to justice.

"We have already seen how dangerous this drug can be, and now it is illegal we will be clamping down hard on people who use and supply it."
