Drug tip-offs to hotline rise by third

The number of tip-offs to Crimestoppers about drugs has risen by almost a third in one part of Bradford.

Anonymous information being passed to the charity about drugs in the West Bowling area of the city has increased by 30 per cent compared to the previous year.

It follows the launch of a pilot project in January urging people to report drugs-related incidents in their neighbourhood.

Police teamed up with local primary schools, Bradford Council, Crimestoppers and other agencies to get the message across in a series of information events.

Inspector Darren Minton, of the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Our initial meetings with members of the public have gone well with more people understanding how they can anonymously report drugs-related crime through Crimestoppers.

“Although the police do not find out who has called in the information, it allows us to quickly act to address the problem. We know that drug concerns are a priority for residents and by the whole community working together we can combat the issue.

“Previously only four out of 100 calls were about drugs, however, we are now moving in the right direction with this increase in intelligence and information. It is important that we keep this momentum going and encourage more people to get behind this project.”

The next meeting will be held on April 12 from 6pm to 8pm at Newby Primary School.
