Drunk boys urinated on war memorial in park

TWO teenagers have admitted urinating on a war memorial after they skipped college to get drunk in a West Yorkshire park.

The boys, aged 16 and 17, were spotted acting in a “disorderly manner” by park warden Peter Fawcett in Cleckheaton’s Memorial Park on January 7.

Yesterday at Dewsbury Youth Court they both pleaded guilty to outraging public decency and were given 11-month referral orders and told to pay 85 each in costs.

The court heard the pair, who cannot be named because of their age, urinated on the wall of the memorial in front of witnesses. The 16-year-old later urinated on the memorial a second time.

The 17-year-old, from Bradford, apologised for his “stupid” and “disrespectful” actions.

The 16-year-old, from Holmfirth, said: “I’m really sorry for what I’ve done. I should have gone to college rather than bunking bunking off and getting drunk.”

The boy’s mother said she was “mortified” by her son’s behaviour.

Chairman of the magistrates, David Heywood said: “This was a disgusting offence. Whether it was a war memorial or nor, whether you knew it was a war memorial or not, there is no excuse.”

As part of the referral order, both boys will be expected to carry out reparations.
